The Manchester Evening News has today reported on the missed chances to stop sexual abuse by former Rochdale MP Cyril Smith – 40 years ago. Their investigation has revealed how police compiled an 80-page dossier of evidence in 1970 in which the former MP was accused of molesting eight boys.
Commenting on the article, leading child abuse lawyer Peter Garsden said:
“The allegations I am hearing against Cyril Smith are certainly not new. Many years ago, we received enquiries from his victims, but the cases never proceeded, simply because it was not legally possible until 2008 to bring claims against individuals where the client was abused in childhood, and they were over 24. If the law had been different, then it may have been possible to bring claims against him when he was alive. I am very relieved to hear of a renewed approach from the police to the way in which they deal with allegations of child abuse from victims who approach them. This will certainly provide encouragement to many of our clients, who pluck up the courage to complain about abuse which took place many years ago.”
